Tisson Travel Group, a new community for Alberta-based travel advisors launched by Tannis Dyrland, held its launch party in Calgary Friday night (Sept. 8), attracting travel pros from near and far. "This is a rocket ship. It’s taking off, and there’s no stopping it," said Christopher Brothers, director of business development for TRAVELSAVERS Canada at the celebratory event.

Rescuers are on the ground in Morocco after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake rocked villages in the Moroccan High Atlas Mountains about 72 km southwest of Marrakech on Friday (Sept. 8). Reports say at least 2,122 people have been killed and 2,421 have been injured. G Adventures, which sells Morocco, has rerouted some tours while Intrepid Travel has launched an emergency appeal to provide emergency relief.

Unifor is fighting Air Canada's decision to lay off more than 50 Jazz members in Newfoundland and Labrador as the airline makes changes to its services in Gander, Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Deer Lake. Starting Nov. 1, PAL Airlines will be the new service provider under the Air Canada Express banner, and not solely Halifax-based Jazz Aviation, which currently holds the contract.

Explora Journeys has appointed Achille Staiano as its chief commercial officer based at its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Staiano joins the luxury travel brand of the MSC Group from sister company MSC Cruises where most recently he was SVP, global sales also based in Geneva. He will report to CEO Michael Ungerer.

The complexity of the Egypt’s new visa process for Canadian travellers has left travel advisors and tour operators reeling as details about the policy have been limited. But what does the change mean for cruise travellers? Celebrity is the latest brand to post an update, saying that passengers will be granted 72-hour visas on arrival.

Bold-faced names from the travel industry gathered on Thursday (Sept. 7) in support of the SickKids Foundation, raising a total of $300,000, at TravelBrands' annual Charity Golf Classic. PAX, which was a sponsor, was there to capture moments from the event and interview Nathalie Tanious, TravelBrands' new CEO, who said the company is enhancing its platforms for travel advisors.

The Canadian Association of Tour Operators (CATO) is expressing “shock” over the new travel restrictions that Canadian tourists must face when travelling to Egypt. "Whether applying in person or by mail, these changes bring added unwanted complexity to the traveller,” CATO stated. “This is clearly prohibitive for anyone.”
