Egypt’s new visa requirement for Canadian travellers has been nothing short of confusing, as PAX has documented over these past few days, but a posting from the Egyptian embassy may shed some clarity on the matter. According to instructions acquired at Egypt’s embassy in Ottawa, visas for Egypt can be completed both in person and by mail, and cost $150 (CAD).

Jamaica has appointed a new tourism ambassador for Eastern Canada, recruiting Émilie Giguère as a business development manager, PAX has learned. "I am very happy to represent this magnificent destination to Quebecers and Canadians in the Eastern part of the country," said Giguère, who is currently completing her training in Jamaica.

WestJet has unveiled an addition to its winter schedule, with an extension of direct service between Winnipeg and Ottawa. Previously set to pause on Oct. 29, 2023, WestJet will now offer four weekly connections between Manitoba and Canada's capital cities. The service will resume Dec. 18, 2023, and operate through winter.

Porter marked its first flights with its Embraer E195-E2 aircraft between Toronto Pearson (YYZ) and St. John’s International (YYT) on Sept. 6. St. John’s passengers can now use both Toronto airports: St. John’s has been part of Porter’s network since 2009, operating with the De Havilland Dash 8-400 aircraft to Halifax, with onward service to Billy Bishop (YTZ), Ottawa and Montreal.

Oceania Cruises has revealed the inaugural season sailings for Allura, its newest ship, due to join the fleet in summer 2025. The 26 Inaugural Season sailings span more than 92 destinations on various seven- to 34-day voyages and will open for sale on September 13, 2023.

New seats between Canada and Jamaica will be available this winter as low-cost airline Flair announces a new service to Kingston, Jamaica, beginning Dec. 16. From that date, Flair will fly three times weekly between Toronto Pearson International Airport to Norman Manley International Airport, Flair announced Wednesday (Sept. 6).

The WestJet Group has announced the appointment of Benjamin Smith and Álex Cruz as vice-chairs of its board of directors, as well as the appointment of Lisa Durocher. Smith is the CEO of Air France-KLM, Cruz is the former CEO of British Airways and Durocher was most recently the CEO of Rogers Bank and an EVP at Rogers Communications.

The Iberostar Group has teamed up with Planeterra to launch community tourism programs in destinations where the Spanish chain has hotels. And ambitious goals have been set, including a plan to provide more than 955,000 travellers with community tourism experiences, involve 35 communities, and implement 36 projects in the coming years.

G Adventures and ACTA have issued statements on Egypt’s confusing new visa rules, which will require Canadians to apply in person at Egypt's embassy or consulate, set to take effect this fall. “This is a blow to both Canadian travel agents trying to support their clients and operators like G Adventures that send thousands of travellers to Egypt each year,” said David Green, managing director at G. "There have been no details provided around the process to obtain visas."

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) says that post-COVID recovery momentum continued in July for passenger markets. Total traffic in July 2023 rose 26.2% compared to July 2022 and globally, traffic is now at 95.6 per cent of pre-COVID levels. "There is every reason to be optimistic about the continuing recovery,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

Disney Cruise Line’s new ship, Disney Treasure, is promising to bring stories from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar and Disney Parks adventures to life “like never before" with new venues inspired by the films “Coco" and “Zootopia,” and nostalgia from theme parks. The ship will embark on its maiden voyage from Port Canaveral, FL, on Dec. 21, 2024.
