Residents in Ontario and Quebec are being warned of a heavy snowstorm that is set to hit on Wednesday (Jan. 25) and deteriorate travel conditions at major airports. Reports say the storm, in southern Ontario, will “bring their heaviest snowfall of the year so far,” saying that 10-25 cm is expected. Airlines, meanwhile, are advising travellers to plan ahead.

The backlog that has plagued Canada’s passport system has been "virtually eliminated," says Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Karina Gould. Ottawa moved “heaven and earth” in the last year to fix the system and speed up processing times, Gould told reporters on Tuesday (Jan. 24). Wait times, she said, have returned to pre-pandemic levels.

A new Angus Reid survey finds a majority of Canadians support Ottawa's pre-departure testing rule for China, but many are unsure if it will be effective at reducing the spread of COVID-19. There are other concerns, too, as some have called the policy discriminatory. Medical experts, meanwhile, have cast doubt on the effectiveness of pre-departure testing.

Flight Centre Travel Group senior executive Greg Parker will succeed Melanie Waters-Ryan as the CEO of the company’s global supply division. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the contracting process that went into building the now-optional ArriveCAN app seems “illogical” and “inefficient.” Speaking to reporters on Monday (Jan. 23), the PM said he has asked Canada's top public servant to look into the government's procurement process for developing the travel tool, which is set to cost upwards of $54 million by this March.

Booking.com's Traveller Review Awards are out and a record 1.36 million travel providers, globally, are being recognized for their hospitality, including 6,779 in Canada. Newfoundland and Labrador, notably, makes its debut in the top ten "Most Welcoming Regions on Earth" list, while Nova Scotia claims the title of "Most Welcoming Region" in Canada.
