Saskatchewan’s small business community, which includes travel advisors, is pushing back against Air Canada’s decision to suspend service between the province and Calgary, Alberta. On Monday (Jan. 16), Air Canada cut flights between Calgary and Regina and Saskatoon, leaving travellers in Saskatchewan with one airline to get them between the cities for the next few months.

The flight disruptions that plagued the holidays have led to thousands of Canadians seeking compensation under the federal government’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations, which Ottawa has vowed to strengthen. But a WestJet executive says blanket regulations, such as automatic compensation, is not the way to go.

Carnival Cruise Line has announced the return of its Amp Up Commission Challenge, which will allow travel advisors to qualify for higher commission rates in 2023. Through the program, travel advisors will be able to increase their commissions up to 15 per cent for the full 2023 year based on bookings made from Jan. 1 through March 31, 2023.

But there's a twist: the once famed Artisan Hotel Boutique is evolving into The Lexi – Elevations Hotels and Resorts, a 64-room hotel concept that will be the first in Las Vegas to introduce the idea of "cannabis-friendly hospitality."

Turbulence continues to rock Sunwing as the tour operator makes more last-minute changes to its winter schedule, suspending select routes in Atlantic Canada and Northern Ontario. The update mirrors a similar decision Sunwing made in December when it suspended all flights in Saskatchewan up until (and including) Feb. 3, 2023.

Playa Hotels & Resorts is welcoming new members to its Canadian team. Effective Monday (Jan. 16), Christopher Jeffrey-Racine will be business development manager for Quebec and Atlantic Canada and Andi Bacho will step into the role of business development manager for Ontario.

G Adventures has formed a holding company, G Travel Community (GTC), to bring its brands together under one entity and make space for new acquisitions. GTC brands are united in a mission to “bring people together through travel to affect positive change," the company said Monday (Jan. 16). The move comes two years after G secured an investment from private equity firm Certares.
