Air Canada, WestJet and Sunwing have been invited to testify about the disruptions that overwhelmed Canada’s holiday travel season. MPs on Monday (Jan. 9) voted to launch a study into the treatment of air and rail passengers following the winter storms that disrupted flights. The committee will hear from passenger advocates and impacted travellers starting Thursday (Jan. 12)

Sunwing has resumed its regular operations to Mazatlan following temporary cancellations after the vacation city in northwestern Mexico, last week, experienced a spark in drug cartel violence. "Every effort was also made to ensure the comfort and safety of passengers delayed in destination," the tour operator said Monday (Jan. 9).

Low-cost airline PLAY, based in Reykjavík, on Tuesday (Jan. 10) announced that Canadians can now book flights from John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport to 26 European destinations, including London, Paris, Berlin, Copenhagen, Dublin, Brussels, Stockholm, Gothenburg and more. Fares are as low as $169.

The latest from the Henley Passport Index is out, and for the fifth year running, Japan crowns the index, which is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The index ranks all the world's 199 passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa.

Air Transat has launched a new promo campaign called “Come Back Changed, which is inspired by the belief that travel has transformative powers. To make solo travel more accessible, and to foster the rise in demand for solo travel, Cosmos is waiving the single supplement on 15 tours across Europe and North America in 2023. "We’re helping solo travellers enjoy a world of exploration in 2023," said Ainsley Ericksen, senior director of marketing for the Globus family of brands.

Canada Jetlines has partnered with TripAdmit, an online booking system providing passengers with the ability to select and book tours and activities in the destinations served by the new airline. TripAdmit is a white label solution that aims to maximize ancillary revenue opportunities from the sale of activities to Jetlines’ passengers.

Air Canada will be cutting its route between Toronto (YYZ) and Doha, Qatar (DOH) at the end of the month. According to reports, the long-haul route is being suspended indefinitely, effective Feb. 1, and the decision was reportedly made for commercial reasons.

The Canadian government has updated its travel advice for Brazil, telling travellers to “exercise a high degree of caution” after demonstrations in Brasilia, where protestors on Sunday (Jan. 8) stormed government offices. Travellers are being told to avoid the Brazilian National Congress, Plaza of the Three Powers, Rodoviaria and other federal buildings.

Ottawa is looking at beefing up its air passenger protection rules so complaints against airlines are settled before they reach the heavily-backlogged Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA). Transport Minister Omar Alghabra told CBC over the weekend that the regulations should place more burden on airlines and put less pressure on passengers.
