The Canadian government has updated its travel advice for Brazil, telling travellers to “exercise a high degree of caution” after demonstrations in Brasilia, where protestors on Sunday (Jan. 8) stormed government offices. Travellers are being told to avoid the Brazilian National Congress, Plaza of the Three Powers, Rodoviaria and other federal buildings.

The mayor of Mazatlan, Mexico – a beach and resort town that, last week, was caught in the middle of a wave of drug cartel violence – is reassuring Canadian visitors that his city is safe. Several airports in Sinaloa state have reopened and Ottawa has exempted Mazatlan from a non-essential travel advisory.

Ottawa is looking at beefing up its air passenger protection rules so complaints against airlines are settled before they reach the heavily-backlogged Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA). Transport Minister Omar Alghabra told CBC over the weekend that the regulations should place more burden on airlines and put less pressure on passengers.

Canada Jetlines has announced a partnership with Boom Group Inc. (BOOM), an employee and member rewards platform based in Western Canada. Through this alliance, travellers can enroll through the BOOM Rewards’ platform to purchase flights at a preferred rate, on all current and future routes via Canada Jetlines’ network.

The Association of Canadian Independent Travel Advisors (ACITA) says it is “unacceptable" that Sunwing has cancelled flights at Regina and Saskatoon airports for more than a month. In a statement Thursday (Jan. 5), the grassroots group, addressing the move that is costing agents thousands in commission, vowed to continue to push governments for legislation that will “protect us for the work we do.”
