Sunwing, through its hotel management company Blue Diamond Resorts, has been granted exclusive rights by the Cuban government to run Cayo Largo's entire hotel inventory – 11 properties, totalling 1,348 rooms – as part of 10-year agreement. Cayo Largo is a small island off of Cuba’s southern coast. PAX caught up with Eric Rodriguez, EVP of partnership development at Sunwing, and others, to learn more.

The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) announced new regulations for cancelled flights on Wednesday (June 22). The new rules require that refunds be provided for cancelled flights or lengthy delays in all types of situations outside an air carrier’s control and regardless of the type of ticket that was purchased.

Hard Rock International and GEK TERNA Group held an event in Athens to mark the official start of their partnership to begin constructing a resort and casino in the Athens Riviera. Construction of Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Athens is expected to begin within the first months of 2023 and last about three years, with an opening date set for 2026.

Carnival Cruise Line is teaming up with Costa Cruises to create a new concept for Carnival’s North American guests when COSTA by CARNIVAL debuts in spring 2023 and Costa Venezia joins the Carnival fleet sailing from New York. Venezia will be followed by Costa Firenze arriving in the spring of 2024 to sail from Long Beach.

Speaking to media on Tuesday (June 21), Transport Minister Omar Alghabra drew attention to the role airlines play in tempering the excessive lineups and wait times that have plagued airports in recent weeks. “Airlines have a duty as well,” Alghabra told reporters in Ottawa. "...We're making sure [they] keep up their end of the bargain.''

A&K Travel Group Ltd., a travel company owned by Geoffrey Kent and Heritage, has announced that it has acquired Crystal Cruises and that luxury ships Serenity and Symphony, which were seized in February, will resume service in 2023 following "extensive refurbishment."

El Al Israel Airlines will indefinitely suspend its Tel Aviv flights out of Toronto Pearson airport on October 27, 2022, PAX has learned. Jacob Mazgaonkar, sales and marketing manager at El Al Canada, confirmed the news Tuesday night, calling the move a "continuing consequence of COVID." The shutdown also puts travel advisors like Judith Coates, who had three large groups booked on El Al this fall and winter, in a bind.
