Canada's vaccine mandate for air and rail travel lifts today (June 20). As a result, foot traffic at airports – which are struggling with operational issues due to staffing shortages – is expected to intensify. The return in demand for travel has even surprised the CATSA. Meanwhile, Transport Minister Omar Alghabra says vaccine mandates could return if the pandemic turns ugly this fall. Air Canada is expanding its international network with the addition of Bangkok, Thailand – the carrier's first non-stop service to South-East Asia.
Sharing the news Monday (June 20), the airline said it will also be resuming flights to Mumbai, its second destination in the strategic India market.

Airport security screeners will be wearing jeans and other casual clothes on Monday (June 20) to draw attention to what they call “low pay” and “disrespect” from the federal government. Screening officers, members of the United Steelworkers, will be taking part of the “Casual Monday” action at 42 airports across Canada.

Norwegian Cruise Line has cancelled the first and second sailings on board its new Prima-Class ship Norwegian Viva. The company says the new ship won’t be ready in time for the cruises, which were scheduled to depart on June 15 and June 24, in 2023, due to global supply chain constraints and related construction delays.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has announced that Thailand’s Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration will remove the ‘Thailand Pass’ registration and $10,000 health insurance requirement for international arrivals beginning July 1, 2022. From that date, international tourists are only required to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result.

Expedia Group has announced new initiatives and incentives designed to help travel advisors benefit from pent-up demand in the coming months, including an expansion of the Expedia Travel Agent Affiliate Program (TAAP) to new markets, special promotions to drive more bookings, and increased advisor compensations on Premium Plus properties.

RIU has opened the Riu Jambo, its second hotel in Zanzibar. The new hotel, an addition to the Riu Palace Zanzibar, is a large stilted structure over the sea, housing two themed restaurants and a bar, in a desired location in the north of Zanzibar’s largest island, Unguja, on the idyllic Nungwi beach.

The WestJet Group will refocus its fleet on Western Canada by adding routes to more communities, CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech said Thursday (June 16), outlining the company’s growth plans. WestJet says it will pause future acquisitions of wide-body Dreamliners, focusing instead on narrow-body growth. New leadership appointments were also shared.

Uber is rolling out its airport reservation service to more locations, expanding globally, as more folks take to the skies. On Thursday (June 16), the service became available at 55 airports throughout the world, including two airports in Canada: Vancouver and Montreal.
