The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) is asking the federal government to temporarily pause random testing on arrival in airports until upgrades to Ottawa’s ArriveCan app have been made. In a statement on Thursday (June 9), the GTAA, which oversees operations at Toronto Pearson airport, noted that international passenger numbers are set to increase by 50 per cent “in a few days.”

The U.S. Commerce Department has unveiled new strategy aimed at boosting international tourism by streamlining the country’s entry process and promoting more diverse destinations. The "National Travel and Tourism Strategy" sets a goal of 90 million international visitors by 2027 who will spend an estimated US$279 billion annually, topping pre-pandemic levels.

Canada’s public health agency issued a travel notice on Tuesday (June 7) as cases of the monkeypox virus continue to spread in destinations around the world. The new “level 2” warning applies to several countries, including the United Kingdom, Spain and Germany, and travellers are being advised to practice “enhanced health precautions.”

Toronto Mayor John Tory has joined the chorus of travellers who are fed up with the long wait times currently plaguing Toronto Pearson International Airport. “The situation at the airport is not acceptable as it presently is. It’s just not acceptable,” Tory told reporters on Tuesday (June 7). “This is not just a Toronto problem. [Pearson airport] is the gateway to all of Canada.”
