Under an evening sky in Monte Carlo, the Azamara Onward was officially christened on May 2. PAX was there to capture the magical moment, and prior to the ceremony, the newest ship to join Azamara's fleet treated travel advisors and media to a four-night “shake-down” cruise that sailed from Barcelona to Marseille, Porto Venere and Monte Carlo with an overnight stay.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel says the powerful explosion that erupted at a high-end hotel in Havana on Friday morning (May 6) was not due to an attack or bomb, but rather, a gas leak. No tourists were staying at the hotel when the blast occurred because the property was undergoing renovations.

WestJet launched its new service to Rome over the weekend with the departure of WestJet flight 32 from YYC Calgary International Airport. Air Transat is back in Zagreb, Croatia after a long period of forced suspension due to the pandemic. The airline operated its first direct flight of the season to Zagreb this weekend from Toronto. The carrier also began direct service between Montreal and Amsterdam on May 5 and it will operate the route until mid-October with three flights per week at the height of the season.

Holland America Line welcomed its ninth ship back into service Sunday (May 8) as Oosterdam embarked guests in Trieste (Venice), Italy, for the first time since the industry-wide pause began in 2020. The ship departed on a 12-day "Holy Lands and Ancient Kingdoms" cruise that includes an overnight at Haifa, Israel, and additional ports in Israel and Greece.

Optimism for new beginnings was a theme last night (May 5) at Air Canada’s spring celebration, which saw travel advisors, corporate customers, tourism partners and other travel pros gather at the Ricarda's Atrium in downtown Toronto. Lucie Guillemette, Air Canada’s EVP and CCO, described the event as “an opportunity for all of us to celebrate the return of travel.”
