Canada’s top doctor, Dr. Theresa Tam, has cast doubt on the value of Ottawa’s on-arrival COVID-19 testing requirement for international air travellers, calling the policy “a capacity drain on the system as a whole.” Meanwhile, Air Canada, WestJet and Toronto Pearson airport have penned an open letter, calling on federal officials to shift PCR testing from airports to communities.

Disruptions related to rising COVID-19 infections and travel restrictions have resulted in more cancellations at Norwegian Cruise Line. On Jan. 13, the company added five more ships to its list of affected sailings. In addition, a Caribbean sailing on board Norwegian Gem was cancelled, mid-cruise, on Thursday due to “COVID-related circumstances.”

The Canadian Travel and Tourism Roundtable has called on Ottawa to redeploy PCR tests used for on-arrival testing of fully-vaccinated, asymptomatic and previously negative travellers into Canada for community use and for a return to randomized on-arrival testing for surveillance purposes.
