Playa Hotels and Resorts is celebrating top-performing travel advisors this week in Mexico at “All Stars 2023,” a fun-focused learning and networking event taking place at the new Hyatt Zilara Riviera Maya, an adults-only, all-inclusive resort near Playa del Carmen. "We are in growth mode,” Amanda Morris, Playa’s director of sales for Canada, told PAX, which is covering the event on location.

WestJet is trying to “set the record straight” after some 300 of its pilots in Calgary and up to 800 in Vancouver and Toronto picketed outside of airports on Monday (May 8) as negotiations between the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) and the airline continue to stall. In a company statement yesterday, WestJet said its mainline pilots are amongst the “best paid pilots in Canada.”

Emirates has appointed Shaz Peshimam as its country manager for Canada, the airline announced Tuesday (May 9). It comes as part of the airline's efforts to support its commercial strategies in Canada and, as country manager, Peshimam will be responsible for leading the airline's operations, driving growth and strengthening Emirates' footprint in the country.

A valued member of the travel and tourism community has passed away. Christine Killinger died suddenly from organ failure in March while vacationing with her cousin in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Killinger, born in 1947, was the founder and owner of Montreal-based travel agency Voyages Tourex.

Registration is now open for the 2023 series of Masterclass online sessions on Sandals and Beaches Resorts, created by Unique Vacations Canada exclusively for Canadian travel advisors. The sessions will be led by Lorna Richards, national training manager, Unique Vacations Canada, who will delve into a number of topics, all with the sole purpose of increasing bookings.

Carnival Cruise Line will debut a new specialty restaurant on board the new Carnival Venezia, which is aptly named Il Viaggio – Italian for “The Voyage” – since it promises a journey across Italy. Venezia is the first ship to showcase "Carnival Fun Italian Style." The ship is set to arrive in New York City and begin operations from Manhattan Cruise Terminal on June 15.

After seven years as an adults-only resort, Viva Wyndham V Heavens, located in the Playa Dorada complex of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, has been reimagined as a property for all ages. The brand said the change, which kicked in May 4, was made due to "increasing demand" for an all-inclusive, family-friendly resort.

Porter Airlines is adding the West Coast to its list of non-stop routes from the nation's capital with new service between Ottawa International Airport (YOW) and Vancouver International Airport (YVR). The route begins July 26, with one daily roundtrip flight operated with Porter's new 132-seat Embraer E195-E2 aircraft.
