Lessner Gomez, director of the Office of Cuban tourism in Toronto, has provided PAX with some details about the future of the tourism department at the Consulate General of Cuba in Montreal.

Mr. Gómez, who is based in Toronto, will temporarily take the reins of Montreal's affairs as Carmen Casal completes her six-year term as director.

"We are replacing her on a temporary basis until the arrival of the new director, who will replace her," Gómez told us from Cuba, where he was located at the time of our interview.

Mr. Gómez emphasized that the Quebec and French-Canadian market is very important for Cuba.

“We don't want our travel partners in this region to feel like they're not being taken care of," he said.

Until the arrival of the new person in charge of tourism at the Consulate General of Cuba in Montreal, Gómez assured us that his office will serve Quebec with the greatest care.

"Our office will be happy to provide all the support that professionals and consumers in the province of Quebec may need, in the same way we do for the rest of Canada," he said.

The love story between Cuba and Quebec

In announcing the end of her mandate and her return to Cuba last week, Casal praised the competence of her colleague from Toronto, describing Gómez as "an excellent professional with a great experience."

The outgoing director, who intends to continue working in the field of tourism on her return to Cuba, was also full of confidence in the future of her destination.

"I come back convinced of the fact that the love story between Cuba and Quebec, which began in the 1970s, will continue to grow richer," she confided.

On a more personal note, she concluded: “I am leaving Quebec, but Quebec will stay with me forever!"
