Nationwide curfew in effect for Honduras
Roatan, Honduras, photo by: Fergal McAlinden, has issued a travel advisory for Honduras, alerting Canadians to avoid all travel to the areas of Chamelecón, Choloma and Cofradía, citing high levels of violence and crime.

According to the website, murder rates in these particular areas, not Honduras' popular tourist spots, are currently at an all-time high, and several street gangs frequent these areas.

All three regions are within an approximate 45 minute drive of one another, and lie in the western part of Honduras, closer to the border of Guatemala. Popular tourist destinations Roatan and Trujillo currently have no travel advisories against them.

Visitors to La Ceiba are cautioned to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times, and avoid travelling alone or in the dark, even in a car departing the airport, as kidnappings and robberies are common along the highways.

The government has instilled a mandatory 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew nationwide, except for the Bay Islands (Roatán, Utila and Guanaja), Tela, Trujillo and Copán Ruinas until December 11.
