Canadian customs coming to U.S.?

Canadian customs facilities could soon appear in the U.S., pending government approval of pilot projects in Florida and Arizona.

A report by The Canadian Press quoted Kenneth Merten, a deputy assistant U.S. secretary of state, as stating potential test sites in Scottsdale or Fort Lauderdale for Canadian customs facilities, as part of a project to modernize the border and reduce wait times for travellers.

Merten was one of several speakers at a conference about the future of the Canada-U.S. border, hosted in Washington by the Wilson Center.

Other pilot projects include the establishment of U.S. customs facilities at Canadian rail facilities located near border crossings in Montreal and BC, the report said.
