Sunwing-led Planet Hollywood coming to Jamaica

A Sunwing Travel Group-led Planet Hollywood Hotel and Resort will break ground in Trelawny, Jamaica, next year, the Jamaica Observer is reporting.

The news broke while Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett was in Toronto Thursday for a series of meetings with key stakeholders, including one with President and CEO of Sunwing Travel Group, Stephen Hunter.

According to the story, Bartlett said it was agreed that the development of the more than 600-room hotel will move forward.

“The addition of these rooms to Trelawny will give the area a major boost in terms of job creation, linkages with many other areas of the Jamaican economy, including agriculture and other social and economic opportunities. It will also impact our overall arrivals for the country which continues to see unprecedented growth in visitors and earnings,” Bartlett was quoted as saying.

The Minister added that “additional room stock remains a pillar in ensuring Jamaica has new and exciting offerings to attract more visitors to our shores. This is part of our strategic planning to keep Jamaica top of mind and boost our arrivals and earnings.”

Trelawny is a parish in the county of Cornwall in northwest Jamaica. It is about an hour's drive from Montego Bay. 

Bartlett was in Canada yesterday with Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) officials, including JTB Head Donovan White and Angella Bennett, regional director of tourism for Canada.

The Planet Hollywood Hotel and Resort in Jamaica will mark Sunwing’s fourth Planet Hollywood property after Costa Rica, Cancun and St. Maarten.
