After more than three decades with Royal Caribbean Group, long-time Chief Executive Officer, Richard Fain, is stepping down, Reuters reported on Tuesday (Nov. 9).
The company’s finance chief, Jason Liberty, will take over as CEO. He faces the task of reviving the business as cruise operations gradually restart after more than a year of suspensions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fain, who will depart in January 2022, said “it was the right time to step down” with most of the company’s ships now operating again, Reuters reported.
During his tenure, Fain grew the company’s fleet to nearly 60 ships, spanning several brands including Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises.
Fain was also took the lead in launching the “Healthy Sail Panel,” a task force launched in partnership with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd in July of 2020.
The panel, since its inception, was instrumental in developing recommendations for cruise lines to advance their public health response to COVID-19, improve safety, and achieve readiness for the safe resumption of operations.
