Cruise ships from ports in the United States aren't embarking anytime soon.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Thursday (July 16th) the extension of a No Sail Order for cruise ships through September 30th, 2020.

This order continues to suspend passenger operations on cruise ships with the capacity to carry at least 250 passengers in waters subject to U.S. jurisdiction.

The order will remain in effect until September 30th or until the CDC Director rescinds or modifies the order based on specific public health or other considerations, according to a release issued by the CDC.

In its executive summary, the order notes that CDC data shows a total of 2,973 COVID-19 or COVID-like cases of illness aboard cruise ships, in addition to 34 deaths, between March 1st and July 10th.

"These data have also revealed a total of 99 outbreaks on 123 different cruise ships, meaning that 80% of ships within US jurisdiction were affected by Covid-19 during this timeframe," the summary reads.

The No Sail Order originally went into effect on March 14th as COVID-19 infections starting to spike in the U.S.

CLIA speaks

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which represents more than 50 cruise lines globally, issued a statement in response to the news:

“As reflected in today’s announcement, CLIA and its member lines remain aligned with the CDC in our commitment to public health and safety,” CLIA stated on Thursday. “We are also pleased that the CDC has announced its intention to issue a request for information about the industry's resumption of passenger operations. As we continue to work towards the development of enhanced protocols to support the safe resumption of cruise operations around the world, we look forward to timely and productive dialogue with the CDC to determine measures that will be appropriate for ocean-going cruise operations to resume in the United States when the time is right.”
