LAN Airlines ushers in inagural flight to Toronto; hosts reception to celebrate

Yesterday evening at the Atlantis complex at Ontario Place in downtown Toronto, LAN Airlines hosted a reception to celebrate their inaugural flight into Canada, which touched down at 12:45 p.m. yesterday, and left at 4:35 p.m. from Lester B. Pearson Airport in Toronto. About 200 members of the travel industry attended the reception.

LAN Airlines’ Luigi Colizzi, Director of Sales Canada, introduced Pablo Yunis, Vice President, North/Central America and Caribbean. Yunis expressed his satisfaction that the airline was able to expand to Canada, given the difficult climate for travel and for the airline industry in general.

LAN will celebrate its 80th anniversary this year, and in those decades  The company’s recent sales have been healthy, with an increase of sales year over year and profitable results. Last year saw record sales of $3.5 billion and a 7.4 per cent increase in profitability for the first quarter of 2008.

The oneworld alliance-affiliated LAN flies to 19 countries, 65 destinations and another 58 additional destinations via codeshares. The airline has been presented with various awards, including Best Regional Airline in South America from Skytrax for the fifth time. Another 26 Boeing aircraft are set to be delivered in a $3.5 billion deal, the largest in the airline’s history, and this Toronto expansion is just one part of the plan.

Yunis added that now there was an opportunity for LAN Airlines to “showcase our signature service to Canadians, who are among the most seasoned travellers of the world”.

GTAA President and CEO Lloyd McCoomb congratulated LAN on the inaugural service, noting that “there’s no question the travel industry is facing some pretty tough challenges. It’s important to celebrate success, increased choice, increased business and increased opportunities.”

Five flights to Santiago from YYZ

LAN Airlines offers service to Santiago, Chile from Toronto, five flights per week via New York City on a Boeing 767. Once in Santiago, passengers have access to flights to multiple destinations within Chile and Argentina.

LAN flights will operate from Toronto to Santiago on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays providing reliable alternatives for passengers travelling to the South America region. Passengers wishing to travel between Toronto and New York now have another carrier choice for the popular route. In New York, passengers can also connect to Lima, Peru with LAN Airlines.
