Spirit CEO eyes Canadian market

While a launch date is yet to be announced, Florida-based low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has its sights set on entering the Canadian market.

During this week’s Airports Council International-North America JumpStart conference, Spirit CEO Ted Christie was quoted as stating Canada is clearly on the list… It’s a nut we’ve been looking to crack here for a while.”

The airline has seen some Canadian bookings, mostly from southern Ontario and Montreal-area travellers who opt to fly out of Plattsburgh or Niagara Falls, the closest cities to the border served by Spirit.

Spirit mainly serves the U.S. along with destinations in the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America, as well as parts of South America. Christie, who took on the CEO role in January, is overseeing a period of growth for Spirit, marked by network expansion and a potential order for 100 or more aircraft.

If successful, Spirit would join a growing number of ULCCs operating in Canada, including Canada Jetlines, Swoop and Flair Airlines.
