The maker of Lufthansa Group's next-generation premium economy seats has revealed images of their new design, which puts an emphasis on both personal space and privacy for travellers.

Germany-based ZIM Aircraft Seating created the new seats, which feature wrap-around wings – a “privacy shield” – attached to the headrest and a fixed backrest shell-like design, which allows travellers to recline within the model rather than leaning back into the space of the passenger sitting behind.

The updated seats will be installed on 19 of Lufthansa’s Boing B747-8 flagship aircrafts and an additional nine SWISS Airbus A330, according to the manufacturer.

The company says the upgrade is reflective of aviation’s ongoing recovery amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The award of this project to ZIM Aircraft Seating is a very good sign for the future direction of commercial aviation in the long-lasting COVID-10 crisis and indicates a recovery in flight activities. The entire ZIM Aircraft Seating team is very proud that we have hit the right nerve in the market with our new product development of the ZIMprivacy, and that with Lufthansa and SWISS we were able to convince two strong partners as launch customers,” said Sven Achilles, CEO of ZIM Aircraft Seating, in a statement.

The Lufthansa and SWISS order adds to the existing order backlog of ZIM Aircraft Seating and enables a “very positive outlook” for the next few years, the company said.

The highly-innovative seats feature other “high-value” features, enhancing the total passenger experience and comfort.

Other amenities include individually adjustable armrests, cocktail table, single piece meal table, personal reading light, ambient mood lighting and an extra-large IFE screen.

The seats will be customized with specification and trim and finish variants for Lufthansa and SWISS to enable each airline to maintain their own cabin branding.

The new ZIM PC-02 Premium Economy seats will be installed in SWISS (A340 and B777) by March 2022 and will also be installed for Lufthansa in the new B777-9, A350 and B787 in the future, the company said.
