As the demand for air travel collapses amid the COVID-19 outbreak, Air Canada has reached an agreement that would allow it to furlough up to 600 pilots, it was revealed on Tuesday (March 24th).
The source of the news is credited to letter from the union reviewed by Reuters.
The agreement covers six months from April through the end of September, according to the letter dated March 23rd.
Air Canada has yet to comment.
Air carriers have slashed capacity in order to assist the Canadian government in repatriating Canadians that are stranded in countries as a result of COVID-19 restricting border and airport access.
The cuts also stem from governments imposing travel restrictions to halt the spread of the virus.
Air Canada’s April schedule was recently reduced by 80 per cent and the carrier has suspended its leisure service Rouge.
